Answer: The dumper winding reduce the hunting in alternators operating in parallel. The damper windings consists of short-circuit copper bars embedded in the pole-faces of the salient pole rotor. When hunting occurs, there is a shifting of the armature flux across the pole faces thereby inducing current in the damper winding. Since any induced current opposes the actions that produces it (Lenz Law), the hunting action is opposed by the flow of induced current.
