Answer: Alternators are generally connected in Star, due to the following reasons
1. A star connected alternator will require less number of turn then a delta connected alternator, for the same line voltage.
2. For the same line voltage, a star connector alternator requires less insolutions then a delta connected alternator.
3. In a star connected alternator, the line voltage remain sinusoidal at all load conditions but in Delta connections third harmonic voltage do not cancel out but add up.
