A zero ohm resistor is often called zero ohm link resistors and are designed to link to circuits to together just like any other wire.

Why not use a wire or trace instead? Often circuit boards are designed with multiple configurations and functions in one design. Many times these configurations and functions can’t coexist in single circuit because they will conflict with each other.
