Bushings are mostly used in high voltage transformers. Before diving into details, the basic idea of a high voltage line being near to earth creates strong electric field. This May lead to flashover of charge and undesirable stress in the conductor carrying the high voltage. Thus, bushings are conductors wrapped in insulators to prevent these stresses and flash events.
