Answer: As the load on a generator changes suddenly, the armature reaction causes severe distortions of flux in the air gap. This causes irregular voltage distribution around the commutator. The high value of voltage between segments over a portions of commutator may cause flashover particularly in high voltage machine where the average voltage per segment is necessary high.
